Nothing But the Truth

green-bay-magazine

Some people just aren’t ready to hear the truth. So when Farrah King, Neosha King, and twins Felisha and Fallon King released their sophomore album titled just that, they quickly found that the truth is exactly what people have been waiting for. Tracks like the lead single “Killa” resonate with listeners by being equal parts relatable and infectiously catchy, while their second single, “Amnesia,” has shown off the ladies’ sensitive sides. Each track finds itself sharing a part of the lives of the women who came on the scene as teens and are now in their early twenties, and all the while reminding audiences why they needed to redirect their attention back to the four sisters from Atlanta.

The ladies were kind enough to take a couple opportunities to chat with us, both on the phone and in person before they went on stage at the KISS FM Koncert for Kids event, where they headlined the show at Waverly Beach in Menasha to raise money for Children’s Hospital. Spend some time with these women and you are sure to cherish them as much as you do their music.

Deluxe 920: So why don’t we start off with you telling me a little bit about your new album, titled The Truth? How does it differ from your debut album, Unappreciated?

Neosha: We wrote them both, so I really think this album shows how Cherish has grown. It’s been two years since we had a record out, and we’ve grown up as young ladies. It talks a lot about real-life situations and issues that we’ve all gone through. So I think it’s a more mature sound for Cherish.

D920: Your lead-off single “Killa” was all over the place.

Neosha: (laughs) Yeah it’s a good dance song.

Felisha: I think it’s amazing how loyal our fans are from Unappreciated, and now we’re gaining even more fans with The Truth. We feel so blessed!

D920:
What about your second single?

Felisha:
Our second single is titled “Amnesia.” It’s about a girl who had her heart broken in the past, and another guy is trying to give her the time of day but she’s basically telling him, “Unless I come across a case of amnesia, it’s not happening,” - because it just hurts too bad. Fallon: We just shot the video the other day for it too.

D920: Really? Do tell, do tell! Fallon: It’s in black and white, and really very emotional. We do a lot of acting in it, actually.

Felisha: We are a lot more grown-up in this video, actually. Really sexy…

Farrah: Yeah, sexy! (laughs)

D920: How much of the album consists of those more upbeat dance tracks that people know you for?

Neosha: There’s a great mixture. We have uptempo for the clubs, we have midtempos, we have our love records…

D920:
Uh-oh, love songs!

Neosha:
(laughs) Yeah…

D920: Spill it! What tracks are the more personal ones?

Neosha:
I would definitely say that most of the record is either stuff we’ve been through ourselves or we know people who have been through it. Each track touches us in different ways.

D920:
Which tracks did you work with The Dream on?

Neosha:
There’s a song called “Framed Out,” and a song called “Trippin’.” They’re both up-tempo records – they did their thing. It couldn’t have come out any better.

D920:
Being that you were all so young when you got started, and you achieved a good chunk of success with “Do It To It,” where there any surprises about the industry?

Neosha:
We learned it’s more about the business side. We learned quickly that it’s as much about business as it is music, so we needed to have level heads and keep our heads straight.

D920: Has your image changed with that growth?

Neosha: We are getting our sexy on (laughs). It’s not so much that you can’t recognize us, but like our music it shows growth. We’ve gone from young teenage girls and grown into women.

D920: So you have the songwriting thing down – any plans to produce? Learn instruments maybe?

Neosha: Yes, definitely! Fallon and Felisha, want to have their own production company. Farrah wants to have her own record label, and I want to do modeling. We just got offered our first movie role too.

D920: So you kind of want to expand and take over the world, essentially?

Neosha: (laughs) Yes!

D920:
Starting with Wisconsin, right? Have you ever been here before? Fallon: Yeah we’ve been to Milwaukee, actually.

D920:
What do you think of Appleton? Any initial thoughts?

Farrah:
It actually reminds us of Columbus, Georgia! And we have family that lives in Chicago, so we’ve been back and forth.

D920:
It’s very exciting to have you come into our market as we’re growing and emerging ourselves. We’re very happy to have you!

(All):
Thank you!

D920: Have there been any conversations about hopping on a summer tour? There are some big ones out there that have your name all over it…

Felisha:
We have been looking at some tours for this summer. Nothing finalized yet, but we’re definitely discussing it.

D920:
Are you itching to get out there and do some shows?

Felisha: It’s a lot of fun – we love performing.

Farrah:
We live to perform, really.

D920:
And after all this time, and even that two years in between albums, you’re ready, right?

Neosha: We are. We took our time and made this album very personal. You can see the growth.

Felisha:
We took our time, and we made it the truth!
